In conjunction with the new exhibit “Reporting Vietnam,” the Newseum presents a special evening program featuring women who covered the Vietnam War. Denby Fawcett, Jurate Kazickas, Edith Lederer and Laura Palmer will share their experiences as female journalists reporting from Vietnam.

CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr will moderate the program.

Denby Fawcett quit her job as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1966 when her editors refused her request to cover the war. Ready to leave for Vietnam as a freelancer, she was hired by the Honolulu Advertiser and was sent to Saigon.

Jurate Kazickas used her $500 winnings from the game show “Password” to buy a one-way plane ticket to Saigon, where she covered the war as a freelance reporter. She reported from many battle scenes, including the siege of Khe San, where she was wounded while interviewing Marines for WOR Radio.

Edith Lederer was the first woman assigned full-time to the Associated Press staff reporting the Vietnam War. Her experiences in Vietnam led to her future work as a foreign correspondent.

Laura Palmer left for Vietnam after graduating from college in 1972. She covered the war for ABC Radio, NBC Radio, Time and Rolling Stone, including the U.S. evacuation of Saigon by helicopter.

Free, RSVP required here.
