First Annual Taste of Entrepreneurship Gala

BUILD Metro DC, the region’s largest high school entrepreneurship incubator program, serving under-resourced communities, is excited to be hosting its first annual Taste of Entrepreneurship Gala on March 26, 2015, at Union Market honoring internationally recognized culinary innovator, Chef José Andrés.

 

The event will spotlight the licensed businesses and products of BUILD Metro DC’s student teams, feature bites from around the city, host a live auction, and honor chef José Andrés as the recipient of their Innovation in Entrepreneurship Award. During a cocktail reception prior to the dinner attendees will have the opportunity to meet these incredible entrepreneurs, check out their products and support their businesses.  

                                                          

Along with a keynote by the culinary innovator, the event will also feature high school senior Geraldine Bolden, BUILD participant and Chief Operating Officer of the student run business, Tasty Treats. A resident of Ward 7 in Southeast DC, Geraldine will share how BUILD has become a key support in her life as she navigates the challenges of growing up in a tough neighborhood and preparing to apply to college to become a clinical psychologist.

About BUILD:

BUILD was launched in Redwood City, CA in 1999 and operates five sites in Washington, DC, Boston, and the San Francisco Bay Area, serving 1,300 students. BUILD’s mission is to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities through entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning, equipping them for high school, college, and career success. From 9th – 12th grade, BUILD guides students through every step of starting and running a licensed business: writing a business plan, working in teams, pitching investors, budgeting, manufacturing, and selling products. “BUILDers” also receive extensive academic training, including classroom tutoring, SAT and ACT prep courses, college application guidance, financial aid support, and guided college tours each school year. Through this high touch, high impact four year program, BUILD pushes students to recognize their talents, take charge of their academic success, and break out of the cycle of poverty.

 

BUILD Metro DC serves over 300 students at six high schools in the District and provides direct service at no cost to our partner schools. BUILD Metro DC operates the region’s largest youth business incubator, where more than 40 student business teams operate their enterprises. It was chosen by the Cataloge for Philanthropy as “One of the Best Local Charities” in the Greater Washington area for 2013-2014.
