Newseum
The Newseum will host ‘Privacy vs. National Security: A Conversation,’ the final event of the 10-day ‘Orwellian America’ program with the DC Public Library.
The event will bring together NSA whistleblower J. Kirk Wiebe, who exposed a secret program at the agency to monitor millions of Americans’ communications after 9/11, and Faisal Gill, a distinguished Muslim-American lawyer, former Department of Homeland Security advisor to George W. Bush and Republican candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates, who was targeted by government surveillance.
The event will also include International Spy Museum historian and curator Dr. Vince Houghton and Gene Policinski, Newseum Chief Operating Officer and co-author of Whistleblowers, Leaks and Media. Those who are unable to attend in person can watch the livestream at http://dclibrary.org/
“Orwellian America? Government Transparency and Personal Privacy in the Digital Age” programming ranges from practical—protecting consumer information and the identities of minors—to the philosophical—considering the ramifications of digital governmental surveillance. The series reflects the library community’s commitment to user privacy in a digital environment where password-protected messages can be accessed by the federal government and hackers alike.
