The Embassy of Canada is pleased to announce the opening of Under the Same Stars (Ulluriat ataanittuinnai), a photography exhibit by Fulbright Canada grantee, Acacia Johnson. Photographed during her four month residence on the north shore of Baffin Island, this community-focused perspective provides an intimate glimpse of life in the Canadian Arctic.

Originally from Alaska, Johnson is a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and is now based somewhere between Norway and the polar seas. Using a large-format view camera and color film, she has pursued projects across Alaska, Iceland, northern Scandinavia, Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. She has exhibited her photographs internationally and has pieces included in collections at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American History

Upon receiving the Fulbright Grant, Johnson created Under the Same Stars, an exhibit curated by National Geographic photo editor Kim Hubbard. The Fulbright Award, celebrating its 25th anniversary in Canada, was created by President Harry Truman in order to enhance mutual understanding between the people of Canada and the people of the United States of America by providing support to individuals such as Johnson while they conduct research, lecture, or enroll in formal academic programs in another country.

The Embassy’s art gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, free of charge. Under the Same Stars opens September 16, 2015 to January 29, 2016.
