The Culinary Historians of Washington Are Pleased to Present Dr. Libby O’Connell “From Caviar to Leek Pie: Food and Society in America’s Gilded Age”

Dr. Libby O’Connell will speak on food during America’s Gilded Age, a era of rapid societal change. The time from 1870 to 1900 featured vivid characters such as Diamond Jim Brady, J.P. Morgan, and William K. Vanderbilt, and others whose enormous wealth influenced the rise of famous restaurants like Antoine’s, Delmonico’s, and Palmer House. At the same time, new immigrants brought their rich food culture to America, changing the way we eat forever. The contrasts, and sometimes clashes, in foodways reflected changes in American society as a whole and mirror some of the same cultural changes we are experiencing today.

Dr. O’Connell believes that every food tells a story and that tracing changes in what and how we eat, how we prepare and present food extends our understanding of the past and the future. O’Connell is the author of The American Plate: A History in 100 Bites (2014). She is the Chief Historian Emeritus at the History Channel, where she worked for 23 years in education and corporate social responsibility. She has appeared as a commentator on the History Channel, A&E, the Today Show, and CNN. Her work in television, historic preservation, and education has earned her four national Emmy awards and numerous other honors.
