All That Jazz

Asked what jazz is, Louis Armstrong famously said, “If you gotta ask you ain’t never gonna know.” And the same if you ask what jazz has to do with the Foundry’s all-gallery members show in April. Yet the discerning critic may find her correspondences. From Patsy Fleming’s New Orleans-inflected Jazz to Brian Truesdale’s Thelonius Totem, the works reflect the improvisatory discipline of music. You feel the moodiness of Kathryn Wiley’s Burnt Sienna Blues and the rhythmic disjunction of Gregory O’Hanlon’s Hirshhorn II.
And if you come on the 29th you’ll hear some actual jazz, in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.
