Bistro Bohem
Bistro Bohem, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, will present the film The World Belongs to Us (Svět patří nám) by director Martin Frič on January 24, at 7 pm.
The comic duo played by Czech comedians Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich take viewers inside the struggle between a conman named Dexler and a group of factory workers led by Dexler’s former colleague Forman, a newscaster named Marketa, and the factory’s director. The duo eventually joins the workers to defeat a fascist plot to overthrow the government through comedic scenarios reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin and The Three Stooges. The film was extremely successful up until its release, but the negative was destroyed during the Nazi occupation. Enjoy this rare feature as part of the Film and Beer Series. (Director: Martin Frič, 1937, 90 min., Czech w/English subtitles)
This classic comedy of the 1930s was made with the intent to reinforce the unity of the people in light of the advancing fascism. When fascism temporarily took over the field, the film vanished. After WWII, one incomplete copy of the film was discovered from which the film was recompiled in its present form.
