Free End of Summer Art and Dance Party at Torpedo Factory Art Center

The Torpedo Factory Art Center stays open late on Friday, August 10 for the next Late Shift event. Summer Fling is an end of summer dance party celebrating five decades of the Art Center's history.

DJ Starchild gets the night started with retro hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and today. Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit with retro dress from their favorite decade. The DIY corsage table is a must before the prom portrait selfie station. Along the waterfront entrance, visitors can help decorate the school spirit banner from their favorite decade.

Guest artist and filmmaker Gabrielle Tillenburg shows her video installation Enchantment Under the Sea, looping memorable prom/homecoming/school dance scenes from classic and iconic teen movies. Outside, video and comic book artist Nguyen Khoi Nguyen projects Summer Flingagainst the central wall.

In Target Gallery, there will be a special reception for Illuminate. The exhibition explores artificial light as the primary medium. Artist talks begin at 8 pm. Find hands-on activities in the New Project Studio (Studio 8) with emerging artists Han Sol JeonMichelle Shiyu Chen, and Shani Shih as part of New Art/New Voices. Summer post-grad resident Sara Roberts leads her own hands-on project in Studio 319.

Find new art throughout the building as artists on all three floors keep their doors open into the evening.

About the Torpedo Factory Art Center

Founded in 1974 in an old munitions plant, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest number of publicly accessible working artist studios under one roof. In an effort to sustain the arts in Alexandria, the Torpedo Factory is temporarily part of the City of Alexandria’s Office of the Arts, a division of the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities. Just south of Washington, D.C., the Torpedo Factory Art Center overlooks the Potomac River in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va. Each year, more than a half million national and international visitors meet and interact with more than 160 resident artists in 82 studios and seven galleries. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is also home to The Art League Gallery and School, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, and the Alexandria EatsPlace Café and Market.
